On Sunday the 3rd August Warringah Concert Brass performed to a crowd of over 300 people by participating in a "concert with a cause" to help raise money for Blue Dragon Children's Foundation.
Blue Dragon Children’s Foundation is an Australian charity working in Vietnam with children in crisis. From very humble beginnings in 2003, they have grown to an organisation of 66 dedicated staff supporting over 1,500 of the most vulnerable children throughout Vietnam every year.
When Blue Dragon contacted Warringah Brass and asked us to participate in fund raising concert the band was only too happy to be part of such a great cause.
The band opened the concert with Olympic Fanfare (John Williams arr. Peter Graham) and set the scene for St. Ives High School Concert Band and Soprano Ms Amelia Farrugia to perform the first half of the concert.
The second half opened with a choreographed arrangement of Pastime in Good Company (Stephen Bulla). This proved popular with the audience and set the scene for the fun arrangement of Darrol Barry's "Best Of Bond".
Next to perform, and arguably the highlight of the concert, was guest artist and part time member of the band Ed Diefus. Ed played an original work by Darrol Barry, titled Impromptu for Tuba. Ed was on top form, and with band accompanying well the stage was set for Ed to take it to the next level – and he did. Ed, originally from the US where he played with orchestras such as Syracuse Symphony Orchestra, now resides in Sydney and holds the position of principal Tuba with the Australian Opera and Ballet Orchestra. If the crowd didn’t know who Ed was before he played, they sure did when he finished. Ed thrilled the crowd and band as he entertained with the virtuosic piece Variations on Barnacle Bill, the Sailor( Carson Robinson and Frank Luther, adapted by Steve Frank)– A truly world class performance.
The band then returned to finish the program playing Steven Ponsford'sTuris Fortissima, and a lovely rendition of Peter Graham’s Crimond.
It’s a great experience playing for an appreciative crowd with world class soloists and it was made even more special being part of a wonderful event for the Blue Dragon Children’s foundation. To see more photos of the concert click here
